Janaury 2008:
Power to save a life

According to the American Heart Association, sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is one of the leading causes of death in the US, claiming more than 340,000 lives each year.  Getting proper aid to a victim within 5 minutes is critical to a chance at recovery.  Good cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the administration of an electrical shock from an automated external defibrillator (AED) may provide the best chance of returning the heart to its normal rhythm.

Philips has designed a line of AEDs that can be placed at critical public locations – areas where large numbers of people gather:

  • Schools
  • Malls
  • Community buildings

On the other hand a family member may need help right at home.

These easy-to-use units can be called upon immediately when an SCA event occurs.  Remember, by stroke of fate, you may be the best hope for an SCA victim.  Would you know what to do?

In this issue we discuss new technology and hear from regular people who have lived through SCA.

Exam Guide: Cardiac Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a non-invasive and virtually painless means of looking into your body.  An echocardiogram is used to assess cardiac function.  Arriving at the hospital following an SCA event, doctors may use ultrasound to diagnose the underlying problem.
