The Queen Opens New Philips Scanners at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King's Lynn
HRH Queen Elizabeth II when she toured The QueenElizabethHospital in King’s Lynn opened two recently-installed Philips’ CT Brilliance Scanners. The two systems are located in a brand new radiology suite and represent an expansion of the hospital’s facilities. One of the scanners replaced an existing Philips’ system.

The hospital invested in Philips Brilliance CT technology with two Brilliance 64-channel scanners. The 64-channel configuration provides large volume, thin-slice coverage to improve diagnostic confidence, image quality and productivity. For example, with 40mm of thin-slice coverage, it broadens horizons in cardiac imaging, allowing for unprecedented coronary artery evaluation. It also provides outstanding performance in advanced pulmonary imaging, multi-organ trauma evaluation and low-dose paediatric applications.
The systems come equipped with Philips’ Brilliance Everywhere, new Portal technology that gives the freedom and flexibility to have access to patient information from different areas within the hospital, as well as to remote sites. This flexibility means that clinical images, tools and full-featured CT applications are now accessible whenever and wherever needed at the click of a mouse.
Dr. Martin Crowe, Clinical Director says, “We are still coming to terms with the immense leap in image quality that these new scanners offer. The ability to turn your own PC into a diagnostic workstation, using the Portal, is key to the way we work. The Portal also plays an important role in demonstrating the images to clinicians in multi-disciplinary team meetings. We have also been most impressed by the applications training and support received from Philips. This has allowed the radiographers to seamlessly move from one technology to the next with minimal disruption to the service.”
Another unique feature of one of the scanner rooms is the ambient lighting. Philips’ AmbiScene-Healthcare is a flexible lighting concept designed to help hospitals provide better, more patient-centred care, whilst also improving operational efficiency. Variation in light colour and intensity helps patients relax by creating a comforting ambience during the procedure. This can speed up procedures, improving throughput time.
Dr. Crowe continues, "Whilst the increase in capacity has allowed us to slash waiting times, features such as the AmbiScene lighting have contributed to the overall improvement in patient experience. These were the main drivers for building the new suite.”
The QueenElizabethHospital’s Radiology Department has been undergoing a major improvement and refurbishment initiative and the two scanners were purchased as part of this funding programme. The Queen when touring the hospital was presented with two bananas by a patient, Betty Hyde, in memory of the late Queen Mother’s gift to Betty during the Second World War in 1943. The hospital is named after Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.
